You'll find that just unplugging the antenna's is only partly protective. 
Sometimes ligning just appears out of the blue, in any case you may not have 
heard the first few lightnings until it is close by.

It is better to have an permanent protection in place like a surge protector 
that is DC blocking and has a bleeder resistor or inductance to earth. 

I only unplug the antenna's when I am away for extended periods, if I am not 
active during the day I do switch the rig to the internal dummy load in the ATU.

I unplug all my incoming antenna lines (etc.) at my

window patch panel.  However, prior to plugging

the ant lines back in later, I short the center to the

shield briefly in the off chance the antenna system

has any static built up.  Maybe a good idea?
