Hi all,
I got the 30 meter XTAL OSC. coil removed, slug unscrewed, coil
reinstalled and slug put back in with dental floss to make the fit tight
enough to work. I have adjusted all of the XTAL OSCs, according to the
procedure Ten-Tec told me, and now the rig puts out reasonable power on
all bands. It is putting out 100 watts on all bands except 15, 12 and
10, where it is 80 to 90 watts. There is no more "drift and relock"
sound on any band.
The mixer balance control also had an affect on the power output
especially on 80 and 160. I adjusted it to get full 100 watts on 160 and
80 meters. Hopefully the power I measured is not including any
significant 5-5.5 MHz VFO component. I suppose the right way to adjust
that pot would be to monitor the output of the mixer with a spectrum
analyzer, and adjust for minimum VFO and XTAL OSC levels and maximum LO
level. I have not looked at it with a spectrum analyzer yet. With all of
the bandpass filtering in the LO system and elsewhere in the rig, I
doubt that much of the VFO or XTAL OSC could be radiated.
I put all the covers back on, and did not lose a single screw, or end up
with any extras.
I made my first QSO with the rig tonight, since the repair, and got good
reports.
I suppose a trip to Sevierville and back, and repair there, may have
been quicker than fixing it myself. It certainly would have cost more,
and I would not have learned as much about the rig.
It is good to have it back on the air.
