A diode makes a rotten fuse. It takes a great deal of current to burn it
open and when its across the metering you don't want that to fuse open!
The diode more often melts its junction and turns into a short, that
protects the meters but gives very bad readings, But its NOT A FUSE!  

You still need a resistor to act as meter shunt unless the meter is
already good for all the plate current.
