If that's the case, then bad reed relay contacts when closed affect
receiver PROTECTION but not the received signal. Unless the contacts
have whiskers or flakes so they don't open.

More often the problem is the back panel slide switch that rarely gets
operated to clean its contacts. The switch that connects the receiver
input to the internal TR switch or disconnects it for using the external
receiver antenna connection.
