I have noticed inconsistent operation of my 706 PTT button too. I assumed it was due to the high humidity here in Hilo. I use the button to key the rig for checking SWR or for slow keying. The 706 has no other purpose here. A J-38 plugged into the rear panel PTT jack solved the problem. DE N6KB > Am I the only one that complains about the PTT button on the 706 mic? I work > a lot of DX and have need to press this button a lot of times. It's crap > shoot whether the rig goes into transmit???
