Recently I hooked up an old MFJ-784B DSP box to my Pegasus. While the
784B is still in the MFJ catalog, the EPROM copyright sticker says 1996.
One of the things I don't like about the Pegasus is the lack of any
really narrow filters. I have enough problems copying just one CW signal
(I'm doing this the old-fashioned way, by ear), and there are times,
when the 300 Hz filter on the Pegasus just won't cut out a nearby
signal, which really distracts me.

The 784B allows me to really narrow in on one signal. In addition, the
784B accepts a line level input and has an audio amp for a speaker
output so I can use an external speaker (and not worry about not
grounding the speaker). Another nice thing about the 784B was that it's
5-pin DIN is an exact match for the Pegasus accessory output, except pin
5, which can be ignored if you like to send and receive CW at the same
audio frequency (on the 784B, pin 5 is an input that bypasses the DSP
when in Tx, so you could hear a sidetone that's not in the bandpass of
your Rx filter - on the Pegasus, pin 5 is unused).

The only downside is that the unit seems to increase the background
noise a little and I haven't been able to cut that with the 784B's noise
reduction. I find that under noisy (QRN) conditions, I can hear better
without the 784B.

Has anyone tried any of the other DSP boxes with a Pegasus?

73,
Mark
