I've used the cheapest, generic USB-serial converters I could find 
and have had NO problems. The only issue is that these tend to 
require you to install the driver, since the windows OS will have 
never heard of them. They're cheap: buy a couple and see if they 
work. Our applications don't tend to stress them much.
