Gary,
Many thanks for this very useful information regarding the ground pin
correction.
On the Heil #5 element on the HC-10 boomset, I have HW mic at zero, software
gain 50, SP 3, with excellent reports (that I do not ask for). The mic is
several inches away from my face between the mount and chin pointed upward
towards the mouth.
Another Orion II owner suggested I set the HW mic to 10 and it was too much
drive so it went back to zero.
I want the red ALC light to blink on and off with it more off than on or at
least 50/50 on and off.
I would guess there are as many opinions on audio mic settings as there are
hams, so this is just what works well for me in DXing.
Although it is against Heil's designs/recommendations and common opinions, I
find the #5 element works better in pile ups than the #4 element.

Subject: [TenTec] Heil Microphone
I purchased a Heil HM10 dual element mike with an adapter cable directly
from Heil for the mike. I hooked it up this weekend and had an am radio
station in my transmit audio into the dummy load. I called Heil and they
gave me the pinout, which I checked as was correct via their instructions.
However when I looked in my Orion II manual, it showed pin 5 going to mic
case ground, yet Heil puts pin 7 on mic case ground. To make a long story
short, switched the case ground to pin 5 rather than 7 at the microphone
end
and everything now works great.
Heil appears to have an error in their cable wiring for the Orion IIs that
only shows up when you have a strong am station near by. I'm planning on
calling them in the morning and sharing with them this change. Just
wanted
to share it with the list in case others had this same problem.
On a slightly different subject, what settings do people use on the HW mic
gain (I have this at zero right now) and software gain (I have this at 65
right now) with their Heil mics?
Thanks,
Gary
