Ron,
So you're the one :) There I was with my little 17W Argo V trying to
work this guy in Sweden and all the big guns are masking my signal -
1KW, 700W, 500W minimum, big compression, etc.
Finally, an hour and a half later, they were all done and in the lull
I gave one more call and the guy came back to me! He could hear me
just fine once all the shouting was done. So now I have a nice QSL
card from Sweden with my 17W. Seems that high power and compression
wasn't necessary for communication - just for competition.
I understand the strategy, When I was a competitive Archer I learned
that competitors purposely de-tuned their bows so the arrows would
fly "crooked". With two or more archers sharing the target, one
shooting after the other, the indoor distance was such that the
crooked flight would not matter as far as hitting the target center.
But the shaft of the arrow, being less than straight in, would cover
more of the target real estate. So there was more chance the other
guy's arrow would hit the shaft instead of paper and deflect out.
I can't think of DX in quite the same way. However, I do understand.
73,
Paul
