I've just been using 2.059d since this weekend, and there's no doubt that the
main audio output level is down substantially. I've also observed that when
using NR, the RF gain is reduced and has to be increased to obtain the original
level. OTOH, the NR now seems to finally be working as originally advertised
in that a narrow window is built around the desired signal and competing noise
is really attenuated. It worked quite well on 40M this morning and 80M last
night.

I am still evaluating the new firmware.

Well, I made the mistake of pushing the SUB RX VFO B button and the radio crashed - blank screen nothing works. I have Master Reset, RAM reset, downloaded the 2.059 upgrade again and reinstalled. Still nothing but a blank screen and dead radio. This is getting old. k4ia

Anybody else experiencing a noticeable reduction in headphone output
level (volume) in 2.059, compared to v1?

I have just noticed that my auto antenna switching as set up in the transmit menu is broke??? I use DX4WIN and click on a DX spot and the program automatically changes the frequency and the O2 should also respond with an antenna change if merited. It's broke? The antenna does not change from ANT1 for 160-30M and ANT2 for the beam 20-10 meters. As a result if I'm not paying attention to the selected antenna I may be transmitting into the wrong antenna. The whole thing is acting goofy like changing the sub rx freq?? It never did that before this latest firmware update??? Tomorrow I'm going back to the previous version SW to see if it's a bug and yes I did a master and ram reset.
Any other ideas?
George.

This was the fix we were waiting for to get the Speech Processor working right. I did some tests using an old Collins 302C-3 watt meter which has relatively slow meter ballistics. I yanked the bass out of my audio by setting the EQplus bass control to 0. With no processing and 1500 watts PEP out, the average peaks shown on the 302C-3 were around 30 Watts. Progressively increasing the SP from 1 to 9 increased the average peaks up to 200 Watts. By comparison, my trusty old Alpha Vomax pushed the average peaks to about 175-200. The O2's SP did introduce some distortion at the highest settings, but an amount that one would expect from that level of processing. There was no inordinate increase in background noise that plagued earlier versions. It should be noted that results are highly dependent on how much audio is used to drive the radio, so for instance if someone reports distortion at setting 5, someone else may notice very little all the way to 8 or 9, while others may notice it at 3 or 4.
As with any aggressive speech processor, bass will cause distortion, so pull
out the bass and boost the treble with the internal EQ or an external one,
and/or use a mic like the Heil HC 4 or 5. Although I haven't tested it, an HC
mic element with the EQ set to 0 or a few dB to the minus should work very well
in contest or DX pileup. Setting the low frequency roll-off to 300 Hz will
work also.

I don't have DX4WIN, but I noticed that after installing 2.037j the antenna switching settings in the O2 menu were deleted and had to be put back in manually. Once I did that, the auto antenna switching worked fine. I can't say whether it would work with other software, since I haven't tried that.

I agree with Ron. With 2.034, it sounded pretty distorted with SP settings higher than 3. Now I can go up to 4 or 5 with acceptable results.

Another problem I had with prior firmware, one that I haven't seen written about here, concerned the DVK. The output level was much lower than it should be. That has been fixed in 2.037j.

Yes, the headphone audio levels on V2.059 are down quite a bit from the V1 code and the "Aux
Audio Out" is also down substantially. I had to switch my "AUX Main Audio out" from
the Line-in on my sound card to the MIC-in on the sound card to get comparable levels into the
computer.

has anyone tried to record a send message in send 1 through send 3. when I try

I finally had to go back to V1.373b5 to make sure all the knobs on the front panel worked
the way I thought they did. I have returned to V2.059d and it certainly looks to me like
the "AUX Audio Output" levels are now controlled by the front panel Main and
Sub AF knobs (No longer being fixed in level) - as well as being low in level. I would
appreciate it if someone else with and Orion could check this. I did not see a note on
this in the change history but I have a feeling that there may have been some big changes
in the audio chain of the V2 Orion.

Thanks,
Merle - W0EWM

Yes, aux audio out level in 2.059 does depend on the AF controls to
some extent, although it's not a linear relationship throughout the AF
control range.

Did you reset the antenna menu after loading the new software?

It is working for manual band selection.

The 2.059 blues:
To recap: After pushing the SUB RX button to VFO B, everything died. That is the second crash with 2.059. The first happened when I did a Master Reset after loading 2.059 the first time. Reloading 2.059 would not bring the radio back to life. Neither would a Master Reset or a Ram Reset. Each time, I had reload to 2.057. I then reloaded 2.059, did a Master Reset and then all seemed well enough until I turned the radio off and turned it back on again later. Guess what? Dead. Blank screen. Again, I loaded 2.057 and got it working then I loaded 2.059, did a Master Reset and it worked until I turned the radio off and on again - then it was dead. This has now happened three times in a row. Enough is enough. For the short periods of time I have been able to run 2.059, I have found nothing worthy of keeping. Raspy distorted CW note with the NR turned on. Otherwise, minimal improvement from the NR. Odd action from the AGC that now seems even hotter than the old one which was way too hot. I am going back to 2.057 until they get this fixed. 1.371 looks better all the time.

So far I have only tried Send 1 and 2 but no problems. I used headphones while recording.
