They don't really "work" for anything; just a comparison guide for the
_average_ buying power of the dollar, not for the specific item under
consideration. Some things have gotten unbelievably cheap as advances
are made, PC's being the obvious example. Most commodities have pretty
much stayed the same when you adjust. Oil is a little high now, but
nowhere near the highest it's been.
I think the germane point is that you will be able to buy an Omni VII
for fewer hours pay or gallons of gas or whatever you use for a
benchmark than what a Corsair II or Omni VI cost. Far less expensive
than my S-Line in 1967...
