Larry,
I currently own an Orion II and traded in an Orion I for it. I would have
to say that biggest "cosmetic" difference is the color display; internally,
the Orion II is probably better when using the two tightest cw roofing
filters. I can't personally verify this as I have never used them in actual
operation. Also, the Orion II, I believe, responds faster to computer
control of the radio. The receivers in both are absolutely superb and
nothing on the market today can perform as well as they do with close
signals to your operating freq.
If color is not something that floats your boat, you can't go wrong with the
Orion I. Each have their share of "glitches" that seem to pop up; but 99%
of them are of no concern to the average operator (or serious DXer for that
matter).
