I disconnect things outside associated with the tower, rotor etc, when I
know a real ripper is coming, protect connectors from moisture, and walk the
lines to a spots in the backyard well away from the house and from each
other. It took a hit to the rotor control line to convince me that I needed
to disconnect that as well. Maybe that's being overly cautious and it is a
PIA, but it has beaten the damage I have received when relying on good
ground systems, protectors and arresters. Of course things that sneak in on
the power ground or conductors aren't helped by this approach. One of my
first jobs involved lightning and power protection for Bell System and I got
to see the spectacular results to hits to telephone drops, system grounds,
telephone cables etc. Often we found pieces of protectors a long way off
from houses where they had once been attached. More often there were no
identifiable pieces left. We also saw mass destruction of cross boxes in
mountainous areas.

Hmmmm, I don't know. My neighbor had a 125 foot deep well with a metal
casing. The top was about the level of the grass. Lightening hit is and
took out many things, including the well pump, sprinkler system, and the
19,600 volt buried cable transformer at the end of his lot. I like the idea
of disconnecting everything and putting it in the middle of the room. Then
if you get a strike, hope the magnetic field does not induce enough voltage
in the circuit board connecting wires to blow a chip. But buy a lotto
ticket at the same time. If you get hit, maybe you will be lucky in the
lottery! :-)

John

NO! NO! NO! Take everything out in the back yard and bury it!
