Mine does the same thing. I have even noticed not a dead reciever, but a "desensitized" receiver. When switching between headphones and external speaker, I always just turn off/on the rig when using the headphone jack on the front of the rig. I use the Icom SP-20 speaker (awsome speaker for the Orion!) and it has a headphone jack in the front of it. No problems when using it instead of the one on the rig.
