Freq hopping usually mechanical. On mine, the contact between the alum plates used for the VFO "box" would rub on the case, frame, etc. Placed Aluminum tape on the seams where possible, then plastic (good ole Scotch 33) to prevent the vfo from having a variable contact with the other metal surfaces. Helped a LOT.
