I seriously doubt that V1 was bounds ahead of V2 in SNR improvement. I
doubt it was actually any better at all. That's a guess, of course, because
I don't have a v1 radio to measure any more. V2 is about as good as one can
expect in practical terms. Well over 10dB in very badly behaved noise
conditions, and around 20dB in better (e.g., no thunderstorm fireworks)
conditions.
I know the general sense was that things got "quieter" in v1, but actual SNR
improvement (which is the real target) is another matter all together.
The only way this will ever be settled is to have comparative measures under
similar conditions from both. Or a side by side shoot out at the Ok Corral
or something :-)
