I just acquired an Orion I from a friend who only used it about 6 hours
before packing it up for a move 15 months ago. He never got around to
unpacking it after the move and I talked him into selling it to me. When I
got it home and turned it on, I heard some static from the speaker for a few
seconds and then nothing. Nothing that I have been able to do will produce
any noise from the speaker and there is no movement in the analogue S meter
either. The Display works fine and all the controls appear to work, except
the AF controls, although I do see the audio level indicators on the display
move across the screen as I turn the audio up. I do get readings on the
Sweep display like it is receiving signals. But they are not getting to the
S-Meter or the speaker. I did a Master Reset but no help. I have been
through every menu item. All check out. I have not tried to transmit yet.
I have the speaker turned on in the Audio Menu. I a VFO and Antenna assigned
to the Main or Sub Receiver as required.
I have been through the manual three times. I am pretty sure that I have all
the Menue Items and Controls set correctly.
I took the top off and checked the filters. They are all in place. All
cables look plugged in correctly.
The only thing that I have found in the manual that might even come close to
causing a problem like I have described is a reference to the need to use a
Stereo Plug if one uses Headphones. Appearenty if one uses a Mono Plug, it
can cause damage to the radio. I don't use ear phones and did not plug
anything into this jack. So I know that is not the problem. I am using the
internal speaker.
Any ideas from the group? I am still hoping that it is operator problem
rather than problems with the radio.
Thanks. Charlie Hugg, K5MBX
