The Astron hum indicates it is pulling more amps as it would when the line voltage drops because of the heavy load of the hair dryer upon the circuits. Perhaps the hair dryer is on the same fuse or circuit breaker as the radio/ Astron circuit. Loose laminations on transformers are also a cause of hum. Tightening the mounting bolts usually takes care of that. In extreme cases, adding mass to the metal cover may detune any audio resonances.
