I received this excellent response from Paul this morning indicating how
the Orion II mic connector is constructed. I already sent my apology
directly to him for implying that the answer he had provided my friend
was somehow inadequate or wrong. At any rate, here is the definitive
answer for future reference.

Subject: Orion II Microphone Connector
Dear Duane:
The ORION II is our first transceiver to use an 8 pin mike connector. It
is rigidly mounted to a large circuit board behind the decorative front
panel. The barrel serves no purpose but to gently hold your mike from
being inadvertently pulled off the rig. This was possible because all
electrical connections including grounds and RF shields are provided by
the 8 pins. There is no reason for concern if you notice the barrel to
be slightly loose or floating
