The S meter variations with various RF gain settings are artifacts from a bygone era. Traditionally, the S meter was driven from the AVC line. In reality, the S meter actually measured AVC voltage and could only be roughly calibrated to provide some indication of actual RF signal strength. With today's technology, it's not necessary to use this indirect method. Let's bury this dinosaur once and for all.
