Yes...probably most of the price
differential. The single bank filter scheme
should actually cost less since there is
only one amplifier stage. There could be
some other cost differences due to the more
powerful processor and different mike setup.
The only potential performance advantage
will be due to the new #2002 300 Hz roofing filter,
but I will be quite surprised if there is not a way
to take advantage of that in current Orions. If TT
does not offer it, Inrad probably could.
Ten-Tec also has the right to value price
their products relative to the competition. They
would be foolish not to look at a cost/benefit
comparison to the IC-7800, FT-9000 and Pro3.
At $3.3k they are probably leaving money on the
table for those who are performance-oriented.
As some have observed, the $700 differential
to an Orion II should actually help preserve the
value of the current Orion, especially if there is
no major performance difference.
