Yes, I remember that antenna.
It was a broadband dipole that had transformers and resistors built into
the center insulator. QST actually x-rayed and disassembled the potted
assembly. Some of the circuitry inside turned out to be a scrap circuit
board. It was indeed broadband, in fact the swr was below 2:1 even
without the dipole wires connected. QST found it "difficult to make
contacts with it." Interestingly, Maxcom later claimed that the unit
used in the QST rewiew was a display model that had been "stolen".
The Ten Tec Delta II and Argonaut II were not panned, but they did not
get stellar reviews.
Nowadays, you have to read the QST reviews very carefully to find the
negative points. For example, if they say that an HT puts out
considerably more undistorted audio when run of 12V as opposed to the
7.2 V battery, they mean that on battery, the audio is weak and distorted!
