Good theory Jerome, but I disagree with it! When I try to sing, I am ask to
be quiet, I play no musical instrument, and I'm tone deaf! And I have known
a deaf person who could copy code via vibrations at around 60 wpm. One of
the best at high speed CW was a blind guy, Dan/KU2D.
There is a transition one goes through between 50 and 60 wpm, and I think
that is where your brain literally starts 'thinking' in code, the same as
when you get proficient with a foreign language. I know also, that above
about 60 wpm, you no longer consciously hear dots and dashes, you are
copying words and/or sentences. In other words you are in full concentration
of what your hearing and saying and you are in the 'flow' of the
conversation. Plus at about 60 wpm you kinda stop worrying about the code
itself and just concentrate on what's being said. The other part of it is,
you must make it a 'fun' thing to do and not let it be 'work'!
I doubt that I can copy 100 wpm any longer but I can copy at least 80wpm
solidly.

Copying? I think it's all about being able to recognize and deal with sound
patterns. Most folks have this capacity to some extent, but some don't. If
you really don't, then I can see where it might take years to master five
wpm (if ever). If you're musical, (read play in instrument by 'ear'), even
whistle at tune, or hum, or sing something that you've heard, reasonably in
tune and tempo, then you should have no trouble with the code.
How about you 60 wpm AL -- can you whistle a tune, bang it out on a piano,
or sing a few bars of 'Happy Birthday'?
