The Inrad web site does not specifically say whether the roofing filter
kit puts the new roofing filter in instead of the stock 2 pole 15 kHz,
or in addition to it. However one can surmise, based on the number of
cables, that the added filter gets switched in, in addition to AND in
front of the 15 kHz filter, and NOT instead of the 15 kHz filter.
If one were to replace the stock 15 kHz filter with a 2.4 kHz filter,
then the Inrad board could switch a narrower filter (like 1 kHz) in for
CW, or maybe a 1.8 kHz for "tight" SSB. There are a few problems with
this idea. First is the question of the difference in loss and impedance
matching with the 2.4 kHz filter versus the stock 15 kHz filter. The
other problem (maybe not a big one for a lot of us) is that the rig
would no longer have FM receive capability, except really really narrow
band FM. Also the stock 2 pole filter is rather small. A 2.4 kHz filter
would require some off board mounting scheme and interconnecting cables.
I think Inrad would sell more of their mod kits if they could accomodate
two optional roofing filters.
