It's interesting that a couple are finding the Orion receiver to be noisy.
I find the Orion to be very quiet at my shack and since I have installed the
W5GI Mystery antenna in place of my Carloina Windom I find it to be even
quieter. On 80 meters from 1 to 2 s units quieter with no loss of
transmitted signal on the other end as far as I can tell. So I totally do
not understand the posts about noise unless there is something new going on
with the newer Orions. I have a first production run Orion.
Also, lately I havent experienced any receiver crashes while running the
sweep in cw mode. So I am wondering if this has been fixed. Anyone else
experiencing this lately?
If you run the RFgain at lets say 50% or so, then the NR when engaged takes
the
rf gain back up to 100% even though the display says 50%. It was explained
to me that there has to be some noise for the NR to work and with the RF
gain down that low there is nothing (on my rig no noise at all) for it to
work with. Again, the noise reports are puzzling to me.
