In response to the post on using an Orion on AM, I have used my new Orion on
AM several times and received excellent audio reports from the AM group on
3.885.
I have had my Orion for about two months now and it is performing excellent.
I am comparing it to an Icom 756 ProII and can switch from one to the other
from the same antenna and the Orion has the Pro beat on receive and I am
getting better audio reports on transmit also.
Go ahead and try your Orion out on AM. 3.885 and 7.290 are active AM
frequencies.

I'm happy to show my Orion, as well. I'm located in Williamsport, PA. My
radio is used mainly for CW contesting and DXing. I use NA for contesting
and Win EQF for logging.
Station is equipped for SSB using the Ten-Tec 705 microphone. My Orion works
with a Ten-Tec Titan 425 after-burner and external antenna tuner.
I've owned a lot of high performance gear since being first licensed in
1961. The Orion is the best yet.

I have the SteppIR and the Orion. I couldn't get the two to
communicate between them at first. It was the cable that SteppIR sent. If
they sent you the cable labeled K-2, it is the WRONG one.
If you want the correct pin outs, let me know and I'll find my
documentation and send them to you.
My Orion, Alpha 87A and SteppIR are a "great" combination for all
bands 20 - 10 M.

Very interesting! The K2 cable was not defective. I talked with
Jim at SteppIR and reviewed the pin outs and checked them with my
multimeter. The pin outs for the K2 cable were correct. That cable simply
would not work with my Orion. He gave me a different pin out combination
and then I modified a cable. It worked. He also sent me a new cable with
the modified pin out and that one also worked.
I guess that I am very surprised that your K2 cable works with your
Orion.

I do not believe that the Dxbase 'radios.ini' script in 2005 provides for
commanding or setting the Orion PBT. I could be wrong, but don't remember
that capability for the Orion.

Orion's front end would be a killer contest/DX rig in the
$2k range. Sayonara 756 and MP. Perhaps an old Omni VI
with Inrad's new 600 Hz roofing filter would be a good
substitute, and about the only rig I know of that I might
give up my Orion for. Just wish the Omni VI family had
a way to set pitch control below 300 Hz. That is one of
the few down sides I can see for a CW op, although I feel
Orion is probably a much better rig for SSB than the Omni.
BTW, can someone tell me what the lowest Pitch
setting is on the Omni VI family? Something about my ears
loves 240-270 Hz for very weak signals.

Anybody have any experience with using the Orion on AM?
I want to get on AM on 160M just a little and am looking for a way which
will not offend (too much) the Plate Modulated guys. I can follow the Orion
with a couple of hundred watts from the Hercules II when I get the Orion and

Bill, the Omni VI+ manual says that the range of the sidetone is from 400 to
990 Hz.
I'd like to add my voice to those calling for an "Omni VII". I'd even take
a spectrum display if it didn't overload the processor.

I would like to see Ten Tec move from serial to
parallel processing in their SDR platform. I would
also like to see implamentation of a high speed data
link and move entirely away from 1975 technology.
There is no reason that the state of the art in
processing and I/O technology is not implamented in a
high end radio.

I missed, by several weeks, the opportunity to buy, from TenTec, a
factory-fresh Omni VI+ and opted for the Jupiter instead. I am very pleased
with the Jupiter, my first software programmable radio. I would agree with
your wish of an Omni VII, with a few changes... I have not seen a band
scope that equals the true panoramic adapter (CRT type) of the past.
Instead of placing the band scope in the radio itself, I would prefer a
video output that could be fed to an external monitor, laptop or desktop
computer, or, if there is a possibility, a vertical and horizontal sweep
output that could be fed to an external oscilloscope. This option would
provide the user with options to fit his/her individual requirements.
An added feature of an external readout is that the main processor will not
have to manage an internal display, but simply provide an output that could
be externally converted to whatever type of display that the user chooses.
The Panadapters (BC-1068???) of WWII were fed from the IF output of a
suitable receiver. I used one for many years, until the power transformer
developed an internal problem. It's probably part of the landfill that now
supports J.F.Kennedy International Airport in NYC...<grin>
I believe that it was K3UJ who had proposed a revised Jupiter that would
include an Orion receiver... Now that WOULD be a killer radio at a more
affordable price than the Orion. Come to think of it...what is needed is a
real mid-priced radio that would incorporate the best features of the
Jupiter and the basic-to-intermediate features of the Orion. I don't own
an Orion (can't justify the cost), however, after reading of the successes
of many contest stations that use the Orion, we can be sure that the Orion
can, and does, hold it's own against the competition. For those of us who
routinely chase DX, ragchew, and rarely, if ever, contest... A
'street-legal' hot-rod Jupiter would be a welcome product. Until then, I
have my Jupiter, factory stock, which, when necessary, drives a Kenwood
TL-922 'afterburner'.
