Tim,
With the ORION you have an excellent RX, your soundcard however can let you
down badly.
[1] Always use isolation transformers, for example the SignaLink SL-1+.
There are many types of units around. You can sometimes get away without
isolation transformers but if you get some then you've got them for ever.
[2] If you are serious about digital modes get a good external USB soundcard
such as the Creative Audigy 2 NX or MP3+. The difference compared to a
standard mothercard soundchip solution can be staggering, also by having an
external card you will not pick up noise from the gubbins inside the PC.
FWIW with my IC-7800 I don't need isolation transformers because I have an
optical connection between the radio and Audigy 2 NX.
