To back up my staement regarding phase noise, here is
a quote from page 10-9 of the 1987 ARRL Amateur Radio
Handbook.
"Phase noise is generated within the oscillators of a
synthesizer. A crystal oscillator has little phase
noise. Synthesizers that use only crystal oscillators
usually have excellent phase-noise characteristics.
Some synthesizers use voltage-controlled oscillators
(VCOs). VCOs have considerably higher amounts of phase
noise."
