Stuart,
Very well said... Demonstrate the method to the student, and have the
student demonstrate their ability to you.

Subject: Re: [TenTec] Extra Class Licensing
The problem in not just ham tests, in fact the Extra Class question pool
is
larger than ever before since they added the former Advanced questions to
it. Just memorizing is not something I ever found easy to do, and I
really
doubt that it is easier than learning the basics of how things work.
To do that you have to take 9 th grade General Science, High School
Chemistry and High School Physics. Building a crystal set is good. Those
are the things apparently lacking from schools today. A ham club can
start
a school program in electronics and ham radio. The ARRL is sponsoring it
and provides funding to committed schools. It is called, "The Big
Project"
and it is one big enough for us all that are licensed to help with.
Syllabus help is available from ARRL and other schools like the ones you
read about in QST.
Elmering newer hams no matter their license level; is good. But instead
of
you doing all the work, show them the formula for the dipole, make them
carry out the calculation, and tell them about leaving some footage on
each
end to adjust the frequency once you have it in location. Out in the
yard,
make them use the tools to measure and cut the wire. Show them on one
insulator how to wrap the wire around the eye and back on itself. Then,
let
them do the other end insulator. Each of you, or preferably the newbie,
do
the center, with you supervising his attachment of the feeder and the
antenna connector. "Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day; teach
him to fish and you feed him for life."
