The situation in which open wire feed is especially vital to use is when the
antenna is used on a frequency below its resonant frequency. It is in these
cases that low Z unbalanced line becomes extremely lossy. Open wire feed
shows a relatively high loss also, but it is much much less. It makes the
difference between a situation where almost no power is getting to the
antenna v. one in which a high percentage is getting there and radiating.
