Hello
I have read the discussion about the OMNI 6+ and the roofing filter in the
Orion.
Here some notes by a CW operator:
Nearly a week ago I was fighting very hard with me to switch back to the OMNI
6+, which I had
used very succesfully for several years.
(#1 Honor Roll, WAZ on all bands 80-10 also on WARC, missing 5 states on 80
meter for 5BWAS,
all done with the OMNI 6+)
The OMNI 6+ had a full set off TT filters:
(1.8, 500, 250 on 6.3MHZ and 500 and 250 HZ on 9MHZ)
When I received the ORION AT about 7 weeks ago with the standard filter
setup, I really dont
liked the RX, I played a lot withe the Threshold, Decay, Hang-time and know
that you need the
ORION driver licence to judge the ORION RX.
But after seven weeks playing with the ORION the RX of my K2
and even the TS570 sounds better than the ORION on
40/80/160 and I love CW-dxing on the low bands during the past 10 years.
Then 5 days ago I plugged in the old 9MHZ filters from the OMNI 6+ as roofing
filters in the 500 and 250 HZ
slot in the Orion.
Boy, what a difference.!!!!!!!!!
Now the ORION is even better on RX as the OMNI 6+ !!!!
The ORION now sounds absolut fantastic in CW
I can put down the threshold quite close to ORION manual settings and using
also the preamp.
I did also some testing with SPECTOGRAM an the filter curves are very sharp.
I have not much intersection loss with the 500 or even the 250 HZ filters.
Also the sidetone is much better as it was on the OMNI 6+
(I dont had a fine sidetone in the OMNI 6+ when the 9MHZ filters are switched
in)
The QSK on the ORION is still a little on the slow side vs. the OMNI 6+ but
fast enough
up to 45 WPM, tested with friends of the HSC and VHSC on the band under real
signal
conditions.
So the ORION is the replacement for the OMNI 6+ here for sure.
Harry, DK2GZ
P.S. i see a lot of people here talking about radios and cw, qsk etc. but a
lot of calls
I cant find in any of my logbooks here(28K CW QSO),
so please dont talk about CW, please also qso in CW on HF
