Heck Tom, I think your in the RIGHT place if you are a CW only guy!! I would
imagine the large majority of folks on this reflector are primarily CW
operators. Anyone can make a SSB rig, but only Ten Tec can make a GOOD CW
rig!!
Not sure I can help, but I'll try.
Not sure what you mean by a 'loud clunk'. If you mean you are hearing the
external amplifier relay clicking, you can fix that. If your not using that
relay for an external amplifier, go into the Omni 6's menu #1 and see if LCO
is turned ON, if it is, then turn it OFF. That will stop the amp relay
from being active when your transmitting. If it turns out to be your QSK
reed relay, then that is a problem that probably Ten Tec will have to fix
for you, but normally the QSK relay is very quiet.
With the meter being dim, the first thing to do is make sure you have the
correct bulb in the socket. Often folks replace a burned out bulb with one
that is handy, which will not light as bright as the correct one. Second
thing is to see if the previous owner happened to add a dropping resistor in
the supply voltage to purposely dim the light to his liking. And the easiest
thing to do is go into the Omni 6 Menu 1 and adjust INt to the intensity
that suits you. However you must have the correct bulb installed to get the
best intensity.
Do you use full QSK in CW? (why not????) The front panel has an AGC button
marked FAST and SLOW. If you put that button in the SLOW position, then you
can punch the DLY button (far right-hand row of buttons) and then use the UP
and DOWN arrows on the keypad to adjust the recovery speed of the AGC. (It
actually sounds like you are adjusting the QSK speed, or it has that
affect.)
The other thing I would suggest is to learn to use both the 'A' and the 'B'
VFO buttons and the split mode. To me, this is significantly easier than
using the RIT button/knob, and it is especially helpful when in a CW
round-table where you are never going to get everyone on the same exact
frequency!
If you don't have the 500Hz and the 250Hz filters, I would certainly suggest
you get them from Ten Tec as I have always found them to be extremely useful
for CW operation. Other than that, learn how to use the pass band tuning
(PBT) control, it also is very effective with some good filters.
I have found my Omni 6 to be very effectively laid out, control wise, for
the CW operator. It just couldn't get any more intuitive to use. I think it
will take you about six months to finally decide that you now have one of
the best all-round CW radios available. Hope you enjoy it.
