I have "homebrew" headset I use for weak signal listening, it's a David Clark
headset that I added a Heil boom and mike to. I like to have the volume turned
down low to save my hearing and they seal out the room noise (kids, computers,
Titan amp, power supply, etc).
Last night I turned the volume and sidetone down all the way, put the rig on
10M and transmitted CW into a dummy load. I could just barely hear a tick from
the relay if I put my head near the Orion on the opposite side from the key.
The click of the key contacts seemed about the same level as the relay.
I also tried turning on the external relay delay, disabled the keying loop,
etc, trying to find a setting that would make the relay louder but couldn't
find a setting that made it any louder.
I do have the rig tucked into a shelf under my monitor but it is open in the
back and both sides so I doubt a truly loud relay would be masked.
The Omni VI+ I had previous to the Orion did have a loud relay if I turned on
the external amp relay, this is the type of noise I could see that someone
would find objectionable.
Now if I could only find a quieter fan for my Athlon XP CPU cooler...
