Well, Rob, if your point is everyone should check their audio - and their
signal generally - on all bands I agree with you. One of the local hams
delights in giving "bad audio" reports and lives far enough away to really give
a critical audio report. I have gotten a couple of bad audio reports from him,
but never on Ten Tec gear.
He is one of the reasons I got rid of a couple of the mistakes. And no, you are
close to correct about one thing. I don't tell him his panning my audio is one
of the reasons I don't have his favorite brand in my shack. But it's not mere
politeness. I'm afraid he won't tell me what I sound like if I tell him what
I'm using.
I also agree that an op with a rough or distorted - or heaven forbid a drifing
signal - should be told about it. You don't have to take the bark off but you
can get the message across with sufficent emphasis that something will be done.
Especially if you make some constructive suggestions, "try backing down on your
power," and similar comments are often effective where harsher language only
engenders resentment.
On the other hand, if your point is that one should accept that any piece of
gear is susceptable to RF and you must accept that without trying to isolate
the source and cure the problem, I think you are wrong. Most RF in the rig
problems are caused by something external to the rig itself. It may take some
digging, possibly some head scratching, and you might have to spend a few
bucks, but you don't have to build a shield room to cure RF problems.
A methodical "if I disconnect this what happens" approach will almost always
isolate the offending entryway for RF. Then it becomes a matter of blocking,
bypassing, or shielding to keep out the RF that causes the problem. Most of the
problems and their cures have been common knowledge for decades so there's
really no excuse for failing to make the effort.
