I happened to experience a big difference in the performance of the two
receivers in the Orion this weekend. Our club traditionally makes a "serious"
effort in the Virginia QSO Party every year, and a good friend of mine, who
lives about 500 meters from my house was also on the air. We usually coexist
pretty well sharing bands and modes and don't have any big problems with with
interference.
Anyway, I was working 40 CW late Sunday afternoon, and things were slow (as
they tend to be in the VAQP). So I put the subreceiver on 80 CW (LCW, ~1200 Hz
BP) to see if there was any activity there while still listening on 40. Well, I
could hear a couple of stations around 3550 kHz, but my friend was operating
down about 3540 and absolutely wiping out the these signals that were ~10 kHz
higher. To make a long story short, I switched the main receiver over to 3550
(LCW, ~1000 Hz BP), and his signal completely disappeared. I tuned down to 3540
just to be sure, and there he was at S9+30, but only in the normal passband of
the filter. Awesome.
