Bernard,

You have had several recommendations now.

There are good arguments for both sides of the story.

For contests and really serious work, I would lock it in at 2.4
kHz.

However, for day-to-day operations, I would just leave it on
automatic because you will find that it is an enjoyable pleasure
to open up the bandwidth to 2.8 kHz or perhaps even more and
listen to your QSO partner in Hi-fidelity. As Sinisa said, it
won't be an issue unless you get a really strong signal just a
couple of kHz away from your operating frequency.

I agree with your choice of not going below about 2kHz for SSB,
but to tell the truth, I think this is a Monday through Friday
solution. On weekends, the bands get so crowded, it's nice to be
able to narrow it down a bit more and eliminate the splatter from
adjacent channels.

My advice: listen to what all of us are saying, but also try it
both ways and determine what suits you bests. That's the beauty
of this ORION!

I have read the Orion manual a couple of times waiting for
the arrival of my new rig and I have a question about the roofing
filters. I mainly operate SSB and rarely get on CW. Since the
2.4 KHz roofing filter is not engaged until the bandwidth is less
than 2.0 KHz, would I be better to just lock in the 2.4 filter
and forget about the automatic feature? I would think that on a
crowed band or working DX on a 5 KHz split that the 6 KHz roofing
would be a little too wide. And, I really don't like listening
to SSB with less than a 2.0 KHz bandwidth.

The answer may be obvious after I get to "play" with the rig.

    Comments would be appreciated.
