I already posted a message to the reflector explaining
that the "SSB splatter" on the FT-1000 audio is
actually mp3 encoding artifact and to please ignore
it. That's the price of squeezing WAV files down to
manageable mp3 size.
The FT-1000 has much higher internal noise, perhaps
from the audio stages. That's all the hiss you hear
from the FT-1000 - not from a wide filter. It's quite
evident when you run a audio spectrum analyzer on its
audio compared to the Orion. Both radios are running
250hz bandwith.
I repeated the test after my initial postings and
optimized the Orion's AGC and filtering further. In
that final test (the current mp3 file is from this
last test), the Orion did not seem substantially
noisier than the FT-1000 and weak signal detection was
at least a toss up or maybe even a slight edge to the
Orion. It put to rest in my mind any doubts of
Orion's weak signal capability in the face of K6SE's
original test and questions raised by K3BU.
