I think that I am a serious ham (love Dxing and Contesting)...... So
serious that I am thinking about buying another Orion (to replace my Icom
775DSP) to sit next to my current Orion. My current Orion is my first
TenTec product, and I am extremely impressed....... The new 'serious' Icom
rig will be near 10 grand......... And Yaesu, well....................
If I need a portable rig, this serious ham may buy a production (non-kit
version) K2 (I've done my share of kit building and am done with it) or a
Jupiter. For mobile use, hands down it will be an Icom 706 variant.
As you can see, one can not lump 'serious' hams into two groups.......... We
buy what fits our personal needs, wants and affordability. This is the
greatness of being a free human.....my choice.....Not some body else's
thought.
Goodness, folks warned me about the TenTec Cult............. Now if we can
discuss facts instead of philosophy on this reflector. Or, perhaps the
TenTecs are so reliable and outstanding that this is all there is left to
talk about.
As you may have notice, this potential purchaser could buy both a K2 and an
Icom 706.......

Subject: [TenTec] Orion --- K2
The K2 is a small rig with menu-driven adjustments (to keep the size down)
and the ORION is a full size rig which is much easier to use than the K2. I
can hardly perceive of anyone seriously contemplating to buy either a K2 or
an Orion.
Instead, I imagine contemplating whether to buy an IC-706 or a K2 and a
totally different group contemplating whether to buy an Orion or an
FT-1000xx.
The serious ham will have both. (meaning Orion and K2)
Let's not forget that you have to build the K2 and that it's a bit
cumbersome to operate, and the ORION, for all its greatness, is simply
EXPENSIVE.
The assumptions you make are NOT SO ---- the choice is only Orion or K2 and
it is a tough decision. They are both "big" rigs. One is simple in a more
compact case. Nothing cumbersome or hard to figure out about the menu -
simple, quick to master and fast to change.
There is not a K2 purchaser that would ever consider a 706 as anything of an
alternative to a K2 - the only alternative to a K2 user is a "Tentec".
Again ..... comparisons can only be meaningful on current production runs to
current production runs. NOT an "obsolete" version to "current" production
version.
