There's a star wheel that a ball rides on to make the shaft position detent. Apply a dab of white grease to it to prolong its life. Then make sure the looseness isn't the knob. Tentec knobs aren't the strongest things and the bandswitch knobs seem to be the first to split and get loose on the shaft.
