Dave - I "smoked" my Omni-V after it had been sitting idle for about 3
years. Don't know what caused it initially but the PC board under the
output transformer was charred black and stank. It was conductive and
anything more than 10 watts of power it would smoke again.
What I did was unsolder the transformer (ferrite core) and took a Dremmel
grinder and ground away all the blank charred PC board between the 2 solder
pads. Never again had a problem in the past 2 years.
Its a pain to get the RF section apart.. not easy un-plug and pull out
assembly.
Your problem may be due to something completely different than mine..but the
symptoms sure are similar.
