After posting my opinion of "seat of the pants/good ears" receiver testing,
I was really surprised to get a bunch of mails supporting my position...and
no flames..that's a shocker!
But what I read here was better than my personal observations and comments.
The posts of Dave, K8MN and John W3ULS really make the point with some great
historical observations and good logic...and more eloquently stated than my
post.
Great comments and right on target... Well said, 73, Tommy

Hey, Dave, I will be happy to buy it from you, for the "crap"
value. Will put it right here beside MY Orion; which I have
no intention of selling, hi. It certainly IS the best I have
ever had. Am anxiously awaiting Carl's full blown Orion
software program, soon.....maybe even later this week?

I have seen so many "highly peculiar" test results over the half century
plus
I have been involved with electronics I really don't trust "objective"
tests.
By the time the test sees print at least some and often all objectivity has
gone by the wayside.
I much prefer to personally take the equipment in question and
compare
it with some standard. You got a hot car? Lets take it to the strip and see
what it will do, side by side with mine. Your car has a superior ride? Lets
run
down the River Road and see how it handles over the potholes and washboards.
Your latest boob toob will record DVD's and play them back in VHS - and it's
got triple wishbone filters to boot! Let's compare the picture on it to my
20
year old Zenith.
You got a super tranciever? Bring it over and put it in place of my second
rig so it's a switch flip away from the antenna and we will compare it to
the
best rig I have been able to find up to now and we will see how it does. Can
we
copy a weak station during the inevitable afternoon thunderstorm? Can pull
out
a weak one from under or between strong stations? How are the filters? Are
the skirts sharp and clean? How is the audio, clean and clear or muddy and
distorted?
While the results are somewhat skewed by local conditions, those conditions
are the ones that any rig in this neighborhood is going to have to perform
under. Weak signals, less than optimum antennas, noisy neighborhood,
crowded
bands, and added interference from the neighbors sewing machine and mixer
and
all.
The comparison continues until all parties are satisfied and agree on
results. And you know, it usually doesn't take long to decide which rig
performs the
best. That's why I have an open shack policy. If you have the latest
"SuperBlaster 9900" and you want to compare it bring it on!

Hey John- if they send ME an example of each new rig, I'll spend my own
dollars to buy doughnuts, set them new rigs up in my shack, and try them
out on my relatively unsophisticated, but quite satisfactory test equipment.
... Lessee... I've got an antenna connector over there, and a power-supply
under here... and the rotor-control box up there, and a log book right
here... I think I could stage a pretty good test- I'm sure that with
enough time, I could develop a conclusive opinion. It might, however, take
a few years... mebbie ten... before my DXCC... er... test report.... is
complete...

A recent posting on another reflector lists some variables that can affect
A/B transceiver comparisons, and have prompted the following observations.
It probably is a practical impossibility to come up with a valid real-world
ranking of transceivers, given the limited resources of the typical ham.
Time of year, propagation conditions, location, antenna types and
condition, operator skills and preferences, modifications made, all play a
critical role. We are not the U.S. military, for instance, which can spend
hundreds of thousands of dollars on extensive field testing of new
equipment.
The best that can be expected, perhaps, is for each of us to try out
several transceivers over a considerable period of time and see which ones
work best for us. The choices we make may not be consistent with the
choices of other hams, and they may not reflect the numbers and opinions
published by the ARRL or other labs, which are of limited value in any
event. No, our choices of "favorite" transceivers simply represent what
works best over time, at a particular location, for each of us.
A case in point: an article entitled, "Thoughts on Specifications," by
Willem Boss, A Dutchman who tests radios, appeared on the Radio Nederlands
web site some time ago. (Boss' article was published in the 1997 "World
Radio-TV Handbook.") Among the points Boss makes is that "testing receivers
is not as easy as it seems." For one thing, ". . . a receiver review
without practical listening tests isn't much use . . ." but at the same
time ". . . test results based on listening only are subjective and highly
influenced by the antenna type and the local situation where a receiver is
being tested." Boss notes that a reviewer in the U.S. does not face the
"tremendous problems" posed by the extremely high signal levels on the 41
and 49 meter bands that exist in Europe, hence "you can expect a better
handling of strong signals by any receiver outside the European continent."
Boss goes on, "Receiver technology is a complicated field . . . (and) . . .
worldwide only a handful of reviewers have the equipment, the time and the
knowledge to measure receeivers . . ."
So, assuming Boss knows what he's talking about, the A/B comparisons we
make may be fun, but they ain't scientific, and certainly are not
definitive.

Far be it from me to deflect discussion from the Orion and nanohertz
accuracy but I have a question related to older technology.
It is my understanding that the Omni V and VI both use the same Synergy
Microwave CMP-A12 mixer. The archives suggest that this is a 17 dBm device
but I have been unable to find detailed specs.
My question is - has anyone experimented with other mixers? The
Mini-Circuits units with useable frequency response (e.g. RAY-3 a 23 dBm
device??) are expensive but look very interesting.

Anyway - just a thought. Thanks in advance!

23 dBm means 23 dBm LO power. 200 milliwatts. at least the 17 dBm mixer
only needs 50 milliwatts. That would be the biggest problem with using
the higher power mixer. The next problem probably is that the RF and
first IF stage is very close to being the limitation with the 17 dBm
mixer. Then the crystal filters run into problems handling more than
that much signal.
It may be that the 17 dBm mixer could handle 20 or 21 dBm local
oscillator power with improved signal handling characteristics. That's
often true of lower power MCL mixers.

Hi Jerry,
I've had problems with the Omni VI mixer (and a replacement) getting so hot
in the stock circuit that it became microphonic, necessitating backing off
the RF gain to prevent ringing. Others have reported this too. No problem
with the covers off! ; )
I wouldn't recommend increasing the L.O. power level without installing
louvers or a fan for the lower chassis.

Hello,
=20
I understand that the 12KHz digital IF is available on the back of the
RX320D through a miniature stereo phone connector. I want to add a
connector to my Jupiter to send the IF to the sound card. I assume that =
the
signal is connected to the "tip" and the guessing that the "ground" is
connected to the "ring" to avoid a ground loop. Would someone confirm =
my
assumptions? The digital IF is available from JU7 pin7 on the RF board =
(RX
OUT). There is an empty RCA phono jack, but I would like to make mine
compatible with someone using an RX320D. Thank you.

GPS "civil" frequency is 1.536 Ghz - the received signal, after
path loss is about -134dBm. 100 feet of RG/58 has about 20dB of
loss - about the most the best GPS receivers can tolerate.
Connectors and adaptors also have about 3dB insertion loss as well.
You can get get up to about 350 feet with a nice low loss cable such
as 9913.

Subject: [TenTec] GPS Antenna feedline
I received my HP Z3801 last week. To keep things on topic, the intent is to
use it as an external reference for my RX340.
I mounted the antenna over the edge of my garage roof. That was the easiest
place to get a good view of the sky. If I try to get closer to the shack, I
will have to find someone to climb on my two story roof. The supplied lead
in barely made it to the ground. I took the clock outside and hooked it up
directly to the end of the antenna. Using my laptop, I verified that all was
good. It was able to track 5 or 6 satellites and successfully completed the
survey operation (took about 3 hours).
However, I really want to install the clock in the shack. That's going to
take another 30 - 35 feet of cable. I took some spare coax jumpers and
adapters and brought the signal into the shack, but the clock wasn't able to
receive any satellites. I suspect that with all the adapters more coax than
the minimum length, I just had too much attenuation. Also, I had checked the
jumpers out for HF or 2m operation (RG-58).
Here was the arrangement
supplied lead in cable terminating in BNC - BNC / PL259 adapter - SO239
barrell connnector - 50 - 60 feet of RG58 with PL259 fittings on each end -
SO239 bulkhead fitting (to go through wall) - 25 feet of RG58 with PL259 on
one end and BNC on the other - BNC to N adapter (supplied w/ antenna ) -
clock..
Anyways, my question, what's the best way to go about extending the GPS
antenna. Since we are talking about 35 feet, I'm not adverse to buying some
more expensive coax to reduce line loss. I'll also go directly through the
wall with coax and skip the bulkhead fitting. I'd also put the N fitting
directly on the clock end of the cable. For connecting to the existing
antenna, should I cut of the existing BNC and directly splice the new
feedline (and how would that be done?), or would it be better to try and
install a matching BNC fitting and connect to the BNC already there?
Or is this a lost cause and do I need to figure out to get the antenna
closer to the shack?
73,
Mark
