Sounds like the 40 meter band crystal has aged enough to where it is
difficult for the crystal to start. If there is a separate trimmer for the
40 meter crystal, you may be able to adjust it to where the crystal will
start reliably when it is cold. Otherwise, you'll need a new crystal. I've
seen this problem on a lot of older gear.
