A more basic question: if Ten Tec doesn't expect
people to buy all the ORION system elements on
the price sheet, why are they listed and being
manufactured?

Well, the answer that makes the most sense to me is... another question...!
If a restaurant doesn't expect a customer to buy everything on the menu,
why are they all listed and prepared...? Some folks like fish, some like
beef, some like fowl, and some are vegetarians... If TenTec DID NOT
offer (menu) those additional accessories for the new Orion, it would be
necessary for them to respond to numerous queries for THOSE items from
everyone who has an interest in buying them.
If 'Joe Ham' is a CW enthusiast, he would purchase those items that
would specifically enhance his Orion for CW operation, and not those
items of little use for his operating preference. If 'Joe Ham' was
primarily a Phone operator, he would enhance the SSB features. The fact
that TenTec simply LISTS these items does not, in any way imply that 'Joe
Ham' is obligated to buy these additional components in order to obtain
his new Orion. If what 'Joe Ham' wants is a PLAIN VANILLA ORION, he
plunks down his $3300 and that's that...! Ya want WHITE-WALLS...? Add
'em to the purchase order...
