"...12.1 v at which point the signal has a
pronounced chirp on CW."

"...audio becomes distorted also..."

And finally,
Ten-Tec says, "...12V is the lower limit..."

  (sigh)

I still plan to get an Argonaut V/516,
but I am a bit disappointed in this outcome.
My plans are to shift the SGC SG-2020
to full time portable/mobile use
because of its rugged, brick-like construction
and use the Argonaut V for my desk rig.

My main complaint with the SG-2020 is that
it is not small (12Vdc, 7AH) gel-cell battery
friendly, even at qrp xmit levels.
Any momentary slip below 12.0Vdc results
in distortion. Now it seems the Argonaut V
has the same characteristics. I use a
17AH battery for home that I keep on float,
so hopefully the Argo V will be happy.
I expected that with all the DSP horsepower
that 4AH batteries or smaller probably
would not be realistic, but 7AH or even larger?.

For the SG-2020, I ended up using one of
W4RRY's battery boosters to keep the voltage
at 13.8Vdc. http://www.fastq.com/~w4rry/
When I get around to using the Argo V portable,
it looks like it will be better off with a boost, too.
