Many thanks to those who responded to my question about the audio level on
the Omni V. As always, I learned a few things:
1. Omni V's are all loud with the AF gain turned up less than a quarter of
a turn.
2. Omni V ( and Paragon and Omni VI) internal speakers tend to howl if
there's a mechanical feedback path.
3. Cleaning and checking contacts can solve the problem, especially those
on the sidetone board and socket 57 on
the IF/AF board.
4. Taming down the audio with a resistor involves getting to the upper pot
board, which is really buried, which discouraged me from going further,
given the work/benefit ratio.
As always, the folks on this list helped solve a problem.
