There's been discussion of comparing top of the line rig prices
in real dollars now vs. then, but relatively little discussion of some
of the performance issues vs. price for older vs. newer.
What was acceptable as top of the line receiver performance in
the early and mid-1980's is now either mid-range or even sub-mid
range for today's gear! Have a look at the ARRL Product Review
for the Kenwood TS930S on the ARRL web site. At 14 MHz,
the receiver specs for the '930 and our Ten-Tec Jupiter are
very close to identical. MDS is a -4 dBm difference. Two tone
third order dynamic range at 20 kHz spacing is 1.5 dB apart.
The Jupiter comes out significantly ahead on third order intercept.
This is where the benefits of DSP are clear - more radio performance
for less dollars spent than in years past.
The bar for 'top of the line' keeps getting higher every year, but
the value of what you get for the dollar for ham gear increases as
well, whether it's from us or from some of the rigs the Japanese
are building at present.
