I, too, used the famous Heathkit long and narrow hand mic back in the 70's
on an HW-101 mounted in the car. Not only did it sound good, but being
ceramic, it could stand the heat of a closed car in Texas in the summer
without melting!

Those mics were made by ElectroVoice for Heath and did a remarkable job -
guess they were the forerunner of the Heil HC-4 and HC-5 ceramic elements
that came out in the 80's. As I recall, mine was either a green or grey
color with a slide switch that could be locked on so you could rest your
thumb!   <:}
