Dr. Johnson's recent post said in part (paraphrasing) he suspects the
optimal choice of a mike depends on the quality of the voice and the SSB
filtering of the particular transmitter. I can confirm this, I think, from
a non-technical standpoint.
I have stumbled into what appears to be a very good combination of speech
quality and DX "punch" with my voice combining with a standard Heil mike
with an HC-5 element and a Japan Radio JST-245 transceiver. I have been
amazed over the last several months how readily I can raise DX stations
with my wire antennas and the JST-245's 150 watts driven by the standard
Heil mike. It's almost magical. I have no explanation for it--other than
thank God for sunspots and 10 meters!
