Hi Robert, I own 2 Ten Tec Scouts.
R.F. energy is getting back into your scout, spkr and pwr supply. Try
counterpoising when a good ground is unavailable, a transmatch when matching
may be a problem, and if your battery voltage drop is high due to low
reserves, paralell in another battery, or hook up a charger, or just start
the car. Also, use a 1:1 balun when the antenna is in close quarters with
your gear. You'd have to do this with any other radio to operate properly.
If the Kenwood or Icom operates in place of the Ten Tec, then use it.
Chances are you are not getting any better performance from it than the TT.
Though it may appear that you are.
Understanding why these things are happening is better than blaming it on
the radio. In ten years, when you've learned some of the above cures, and
have taken time to analyze the differences in performance between rigs in
various use situations, you'll no doubt think back on that Scout and decide
that it was not only a pretty good rig, but an amazing little rig.
