I have used gel cell batteries for years with my radio equipment and no
problems. I bought a used Panasonic 6.5 AmpHour battery used at  a ham fest
and have been using it for 8 years. They are used extensively in emergency
lighting. Look in QST and CQ for the portable power type advertisements
(they use gel cells).
